It is proposed that for Auroville’s 50th anniversary, there will be a continuous reading around the world of Sri Aurobindo’s masterpiece, the poem Savitri, in its entirety. Originally, a live, continuous reading was envisaged. However…

Progress to date and a change in plan

The technical team working at Savitri Bhavan on ways to implement the Savitri around the World project has come to the conclusion that the original concept of “a live reading through internet around the world” is beyond our organisational and technical capacities. The new idea is to go “live” on YouTube with a film made up of recordings prepared in advance and supplied to us by the participants. At our end we will edit all these individual recordings into a film of about 48 hours duration.

It is intended that this film shall be broadcast on February 25-26, 2018, on YouTube for viewing worldwide, as well as being displayed on the big screen at Savitri Bhavan. The film will also indicate the journey around the world roughly from East to West, showing which country / place is being represented by each reader.

To make this possible, we shall be asking each participant to send us a video-recording of themselves reading the passage assigned to them, or an audio recording along with a photo. Those who feel reluctant to appear on You Tube could send us an image of their choice instead – perhaps a photo of some special feature of the country /region that they are representing.

The full text of Savitri has been divided up into 325 passages of more or less 2 pages (about 70 lines per reader). So, ideally 325 readers are needed. In order to assign the passages we have to know how many people have registered to participate, and which countries they will be representing.

A list of participating countries is attached. In case you know of any Savitri-lovers in countries not yet listed, please do inform them about this project and invite them to join it.

By the middle of September we hope to be able to inform each of the registered participants which passage they are requested to read. At the same time we plan to provide guidelines and suggestions about preparing the recordings and sending them to us.

Almost everyone contacted so far has responded with enthusiasm about this project to link Savitri-readers around the world.
